How to Insert Title in Excel Chart

Excel charts make work look visually appealing and easy to understand at the same time. It is a good practice to include Titles in Excel charts. Titles help users to understand what the chart is all about even without looking at its data. This is a step-by-step guide to help you add titles to an Excel chart.

1. How to Insert a Chart Title

1. Select the chart by clicking on it.

2. Navigate to the “Chart Tools” menu at the top of Excel.

3. Click on the “Design” tab then navigate to Chart Layouts Group

4. Locate the “Chart Title” option in the toolbar.

5. Choose “Above Chart” or “Centered Overlay Title” to insert the title.

6. Type the desired title directly into the placeholder text that appears on the chart.

7. Press Enter to confirm the title.

2. How to Insert an Axis Title

1. Click on the chart to select it.

2. Access the “Chart Tools” menu by clicking on it.

3. Go to the “Layout” tab.

4. Select “Axis Titles” from the toolbar.

5. Choose either “Primary Horizontal Axis Title” or “Primary Vertical Axis Title.”

3. How to Add a Dynamic Chart Title

1. Click on the chart title

2. Type = on the formula bar then click on the cell that will hold the dynamic title

3. Type the  Chart Title in the cell that you have selected and press okay. It will automatically appear on the chart

You will note that Excel references the Title as =Sheet1!$H$2. Note that when you change the title in cell H2 the title on the chart will change automatically. 

4. How to Remove a Chart Title

You can easily remove a title by right-clicking on it and then select delete

1. Click on the chart to select it.

2. Navigate to the “Chart Tools” menu.

3. Go to the “Design” tab.

4. Locate the “Chart Title” option in the toolbar.

5. Select “None” to remove the chart title.

Alternatively, click on the existing chart title and press the Backspace key on your keyboard to remove it.

How to Format a Chart Title

1. Select the Chart Title:

  • Click on the chart to select it.
  • If the chart title is not already selected, click on the title text to highlight it.

2. Access the Format Chart Title Options:

  • Right-click on the selected chart title.
  • From the context menu, choose “Format Chart Title.”

  • In the Format Chart Title pane or dialog box, locate the “Font” or “Text” options.
  • Adjust font style, size, color, and other text formatting as desired.

4. Modify Alignment:

  • Navigate to the “Alignment” or “Position” options.
  • Choose the desired alignment for the chart title, such as left, center, or right alignment.

5. Change Fill and Border Color:

  • Look for options related to “Fill” or “Background” to change the background color of the title.
  • Adjust the “Border” options to modify the border color, if applicable.
