How to move $ closer to a number in Excel

In this article, we shall discuss how you can move the $ sign close to a number in Excel. When dealing with money on Excel, it is important to use currency symbols. This helps differentiate different currencies. Besides, it helps to differentiate money from other types of data. Excel editing tools are not straightforward like in other editing software such as Microsft Word and Google Docs.  Follow these three simple methods to learn how you can move the $ symbol close to a number.

Using the Currency format 

1. Highlight all the numbers you wish to add the dollar sign to in an Excel workbook.

2. Right-click on your selection to display a context menu list.

3. In this list, click on the Format Cells option to display a dialog window.

4. In the Format Cells Window, click on the Number

5. Under the Category section, click on the Currency

6. Next to the Decimal Places section, specify the number of decimal places to include.

7. Click on the drop-down arrow in the Symbol section and specify your currency symbol.

8. Click the OK You will notice the $ sign is closer to your numbers.

You can also access the Format Cells dialog window by clicking on the Dialog Box launcher icon in the Number group of the Home tab. It is at the lower right corner of the Number group.

You can also use keyboard shortcuts Ctrl + 1 to open the Format Cells dialog window.

Method 2

1. In an open Excel workbook, select the cell r range of cells you need to format.

2. Click on the Home tab on the main ribbon.

3. In the Number group, click on the Accounting Number Format, a $ sign icon.

4. But, if you need to apply the Currency format to your values, you can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift = $

Using Custom format 

1. Highlight all the numbers you wish to add the $ sign to in an Excel workbook.

2. Right-click on your selection to display a context menu list.

3. In this list, click on the Format Cells option to display a dialog window.

4. In the displayed Format Cells window, click on the Number

5. Under the Category section, click on the Custom

6. In the Type section on the right side of the window, type in $# in the provided textbox.

7. Click the OK You will notice the $ sign  in front of each number without any spacing.

Note:

You can only use this method when you are working with whole numbers.

You can type “#$” (without including the double quotation marks) into the Textbox in case you want to include the $ symbol to the right of your numbers. It means the dollar sign will appear after your numbers instead of before.
